That evening I reported the details of the exchange to my companions. It did not produce immediate joy. “They’re closing in on us, and they seem very anxious to find us,” Long Harry said. “I think we’d best get out of here as soon as possible.”

“I don’t plan to stay a day longer than necessary,” The Beak assured him. “How do they know we’re here?”

“I have no idea,” Long Harry said. “I expect well find out eventually, only I hope it’s on our terms and not theirs.”

“We’ve got to fight them,” The Beak agreed.

“How do we go about doing that?” I asked. “We’re running from pillar to post. Every place we go we end up slaves.”

“Our first job is to establish a secure base,” Long Harry said. “Any tactician will tell you that.”

“Sounds good,” The Beak said. “How do we accomplish this weighty task, and what, exactly, does it mean?”

“In this case, we have to get to somewhere where we won’t be persecuted for our race, religion, or previous condition of servitude. We need people who will listen to us.”

“Where do we find all this?”

“Our young lady is the key to that, if we can get her back where she comes from. Her people may or may not listen to us, but they’ll certainly accept us; and that’s a first step.”

“I think you have an interior motive,” I said.

“Ulterior, and I don’t. Our fellow Earthmen aren’t up to any good on this planet, so it will help Thalla’s people as well as us to do something about them.”
